Over the last 10 years, Terri and I have attended numerous workshops, read countless books and articles, and contacted individuals all across the United States in the quest to help our son, Micah. During this time, we've had our highs and lows dealing with Autism. The one problem that has always bothered me is why Micah does not respond to the different therapies we have tried compared to the other children we have known since entering this world of Autism. It is during rough times like this I guess all of us look for something that provides solace or at least justification as to why. Many people will give their opinions and it is up to us to choose whether we want to accept their reasoning or reject it. Sometimes we draw our own conclusions, and even though we know the answer is not totally correct, at least it provides comfort.
My comfort came several years ago when a close relative (who is also a very good friend) reminded me that Micah was a blessing and in some ways he envied me. I responded by asking how can Autism be a blessing? His answers had a profound affect on me which lasts to this day. Micah took me out of my world and brought me into his world. This world of Autism, which is sometimes known to lack or be void of emotion, has stretched my emotions to the very limit and has totally reshaped my priorities in life. Through Micah, I have met some of the most compassionate and understanding people, which has given me a fuller appreciation for the Beatitudes which Jesus taught us and has opened my eyes to how much prejudice is in the world. Micah has forced Terri and me to find "out of the way" places to go or things to do. In doing so, we have discovered peaceful surroundings and extremely friendly people which the "normal world" overlooks because everyone is too busy.
This brings me to our support group. It is through everyone's combined efforts that we provide each other with knowledge on Autism, advocacy, and "tips of the trade" which help to make the lives of our children better; no matter how old they are. The support group also provides us with a bond of fellowship which you just cannot find anywhere else. This fellowship is the reason why there will always be a need for a support group; but like any gift from God, it is our choice on how we recognize and use this blessing.
Thanks to my friend Dennis!
May God continue to bless all of you and your families,
Mark and Terri Cambiano
